Why shouldn't cats have their own movies?

If you have a cat and a computer, you've probably noticed that your at is often very attracted to the little animated ads or even the videos you watch.   Many cats also like to watch TV.

Sure, they don't have the attention span to watch anything very long, but that just makes it even easier to create a custom video for your favorite kitties.

Here's what you'll need:

  • a video camera (or some other way to record video)
  • a computer
  • editing software (you don't need anything expensive, Windows Movie Maker works well)
  • some imagination
  • a cat or cats

Animation is one choice

You don't need a camera to record action in your favorite PC game.

Or you can choose your subject from life . . .

wild birds always provide plenty of quick, random action.

Step One - Quick Random Action

So set up your tripod or record some wild in-game action.  Keep in mind the kind of things your cat likes to watch (or chase).

Don't worry about pesky things like 'story' or 'plot.'  Cat's don't care.  Just make sure you end up with about 3 to 5 minutes of video.

Then it's time to edit.

Use your favorite video editing software - Know your audience

I use Sony movie making software most of the time, but the Windows Movie Maker is readily available and extremely easy to use.

Before you get serious about editing, however, it's a good idea to consider your audience.

  • cats have pretty short attention spans, generally, so your finished movie shouldn't be much longer than 1 to 2 minutes.
  • music or sound effects are optional, because like I said, cats don't care. I add music to my cat's movies to make them a little more people-friendly, but he watches it just as well with the sound muted.
  • do a little research about cat vision before you decide what sort of effects to use.

For my movie I used Sony FX to sharpen the images, boost the brightness and contrast, and mute the color.  I also slowed and sped up the action, plus I reversed several of the clips.

Testing - A Vital Step

As you can see from this example, my bird movie tested well. Toward the end, my cat even tried to catch one of the birds.

So testing is an important part of the movie-making process. Show a draft of the movie to your test-kitties and make changes until you get a good response.

The Finished Movie

Once your movie is finished you and your cat(s) can enjoy it on your PC or television.  Or you can share your movie with cats everywhere by publishing it on the internet.

Really nice job. Love the music, too. If I were a kitty, I'd be one of your biggest fans!
